Album Review: On A Hiding To Nothing by On A Hiding To Nothing

On A Hiding To Nothing are a four piece fast, melodic punk band from London. Like every other band ever they are inspired by the 90's Fat Wreck Chords bands such as NOFX, Lagwagon and Propaghandi. In April of this year On A Hiding To Nothing released their self titled debut EP. Here is what I thought of it.

The first song on the EP is named Any Day Now and starts off very quickly. The band storm through a very wordy first verse before getting to a very catchy chorus. What I really love about this song is how the band have managed to create a feeling of anarchy in the song. It feels like vocals are coming from all directions, you just don't know what's going to happen next and I really enjoy that. Gag Reflex is just pure pop punk joy. Musically the song is quite fast and stabby, I imagine on a music sheet there would be an exclamation point on the end of each line. The vocals carry the melody of the song and have a fun bouncy quality. This is good, fun sing-a-long punk music. The third song Braindead is about it being okay not to know everything about everything and judging people on who they are and not what they know. I feel like Australian punk legends Frenzal Rhomb are a pretty big influence on On A Hiding To Nothing as there is more that a whiff of their sound it this song. I love Frenzal Rhomb though so I am more than happy with this. The final track on the EP is named Paperboy. By far the most aggressive sounding song on the release, there is also a more serious tone in the song. On this song On A Hiding To Nothing get a bit more political and attack the national press, namely all of the lies we, as a nation are fed by them. It's nice to hear a band use this subject matter in a song, it's a big problem in our country so more bands, and more people should step up and make a stand against this.

On A Hiding To Nothing's debut EP as a huge upside. It's fun and catchy punk music which also has some strong messages. Looking forward to hearing a lot more from these chaps.
